Almost Vegan Savory Split Pea Soup

So let me start off by saying this is "almost" vegan, because I use ghee in the final step.....you can use something like Earth Balance and then it would be a vegan soup.

It seems that almost every split pea soup uses bacon or some fatty meat for "flavor".

With this soup all the flavor is in the spices.

This is basically the same way I make my dal.

It is super savory and super comforting.

Especially in the cold weather.

Savory Split Pea Soup

3 C Dried Split Peas (rinsed)
7 C Water
1/2 Large Onion (finely chopped)
1 Large Tomato (pureed)
1 Tsp Coriander Powder
1 Tsp Cumin
1/2 - 1 Tsp Cayenne Powder (depending on preference)
1 Tsp Garlic/Ginger paste (or 1/2 of each if you don't have it combined)
2 Bay Leaves
1 Tsp Salt
1-2 Tbsp Oil (enough to coat the bottom of pan)
3 Dried Red Chilies
2 Tbsp Ghee (or a vegan "butter")

* Place rinsed peas and water in a large crock pot for 5 hrs on "High" (peas should be breaking apart      and look like soup at this point....if not cook till they are)
* Once the 5 hrs is up turn the heat to "Low"
* In a heavy bottom pot (I use an enameled cast iron) Heat oil on Med/High
* Add in diced onions and cool till almost transparent (5 min)
* Add in bay leaves and the garlic/ginger paste, stir and cook (1 min)
* Add in the coriander, cumin, cayenne, sand salt
* Mix well
* Add in the tomato puree
* Mix well and cook for about 5-8 min (until everything has deepened in color
* Add tomato mix into the crock pot pf peas
* Mix well
* Turn crock pot to "Warm"
* When ready to serve heat the ghee and chilies in a small pan till sizzling (do not burn, you just want      to ghee to be infused)
* Pour (carefully) into the soup and mix
* ENJOY!

*** I find that this would serve 4 as a stand alone meal or 8 as a starter

  1. Sounds yummy! I love split pea soup, but haven't made one in ages. My husband & I were vegan for 7+ years, and even though we aren't anymore we still like to cook lots of vegan meals. Thanks for sharing:)
